AMSY..American Management Systems Inc. One of the top 50 companies according to Washington post.

DESCRIPTION: American Management Systems is an information-technology consulting company and computer systems developer. Its clients include telecommunications companies, financial institutions, universities and government agencies.

DEVELOPMENTS: In November AMS chairman and co-founder Charles O. Rossotti left the company to head the Internal Revenue Service, where his knowledge of computer operating systems is expected to help the much-maligned agency with its technology snafus. Rossotti was replaced at AMS by Paul A. Brands, the company's chief executive, in a long-planned transition.

In September the firm announced it unexpectedly had lost a $50 million contract to upgrade the billing and customer service systems of Swiss Telecom, Switzerland's phone company. The firm's share price dropped temporarily but has since rebounded.

In the past year, AMS developed a statewide accounting management system for Illinois, which marks the first time a state has provided public access to detailed information on how it spends taxpayer dollars. Other projects included developing an online mortgage loan approval process for the Bank of Montreal, and a system that will allow the Royal Bank of Canada to issue letters of credit over the Internet.

The company racked up kudos from various organizations that measure workplace quality of life, winning plaudits from Fortune and Working Mother magazines, both of which pronounced the firm one of the country's best places to work.
