W95 is supposed to go on sale June 25. MSFT stock is setting still because several states are seeking legal action to block the release of W98 and the DOJ is on their case because of IE 4.0 coming installed on new computers. When these issues are settled, the stock should move up as it always does.

Win 98 is scheduled to be shipped to PC Mfgr 5/15, but is not available to retail store until 6/25
the new operating system brings together mostly incrementally
enhancements, such as support for better graphics handling and higher quality
images, a more efficient file system that saves disk space and an improved
installation process that cuts the task's time down to 30-50 minutes.

''The Windows 95 promise was more significant than the Windows 98
promise,'' said Joel Kocher, president and COO of Micron who was an
executive at Dell Computer during the rollout of Windows 95. ''It does not
bring the same level of newness to the platform.''

Windows 98 also has better support for hardware devices, many of which now
come with a new kind of universal connector, called the Universal Serial Bus.
Microsoft claims Windows 98 greatly improves ''plug and play,'' a concept
that Apple Computer Inc.'s Macintosh created because adding new peripherals
is so simple. It also adds a television program guide that works when coupled
with a TV tuner installed in a personal computer.

An optional interface for Windows 98 displaces the ''classic'' file and folder
metaphor that Windows now holds for a new web-style interface. Files and
directories are displayed in a web page, with a forward and back button for
simpler navigation. A single click on an icon opens a file or folder. There's a
more detailed help system, designed with HTML, the format used to display
web pages.

System requirements are a Pentium class processor and at least 16 megabytes
of RAM. Windows 98 takes anywhere from 80 to 160 megabytes of hard disk
space.

One analyst said Windows 98 improves on its predecessor. ''It is more stable
seemingly than Windows 95, I'll give you that one,'' said David Coursey,
editor at large with Upside magazine.

Yet Coursey was underwhelmed by the new version. ''Instead of 'Start Me
Up,' the song should be 'I still haven't found what I'm looking for,' '' Coursey
said.

The Justice Department has been reportedly examining whether to seek to
block the release of Windows 98 because by integrating the browser into
Windows 98, Microsoft is in effect forcing computer manufacturers to ship its
browser, in violation of the consent decree. Microsoft claims it has the right to
add new features to the operating system, and that web browsing is one such
feature.

Although Microsoft is targeting Windows 98 at consumers, some analysts
said some features will be lost on that audience.

''They've already gone public with the fact that Windows 98 is the end of the
food chain for DOS based environments,'' said Harry Fenik, vice president of
Zona Research. ''This is kind of the last hurrah. It's kind of sad, because they
added a bunch of good enterprise features and at the end of the day their
company is pitching it out from under them.''
