SHARP is optimistic of securing15 per cent of the local market share for
video compact disk (VCD) and digital videodisk (DVD) systems this year.
Managing director of Sharp-Roxy Sales and
Service Co (M) Sdn Bhd Masatohi Fujiki said
the company also hopes to increase itsoverall growth of user base by another 10
per cent compared to seven per cent lastyear.
He said the bullish sentiment is based on the
positive outlook of the local audio and video
markets which is expected to be boosted by
the availability of more movie titles.
According to Fujiki, unit sales of VCD players
of various brands are expected to exceed
the 145,000 mark for this year, while over
40,000 units of DVD players are expected tobe sold by the end of this year.
Last year, the total number of VCD players
sold amounted to 100,000 units while salesfor DVD players were 14,000 units.
'Statistics reveal that during the first three
months of 1997, about 25,000 units of VCD
players were sold, compared to over 30,000
units during the same period of this year.
'The increase in sales of the VCD and DVD
players is due to the fact that there are
more titles available now in the market and
many companies are importing the disks andsoftware.

Outlook 2000: China Posted: April 24, 1998

China gears for 2000 by boosting component exports

Demand for finished electronics, much of it assembled locally, has never been higher in China. C-Cube's Shenzhen Manager Xue Biao estimates Chinese consumers will buy 18 million VCD players-overwhelmingly "Made in China"-this year. Color TV-receiver sales totaled 20 million in 1997 and the industry could well assemble 30 million in 1998, according to Sun Ji-Liang, general manager for exports at the leading deflection-yoke maker, Shaanxi Caitong Electronics. PC sales will surely top 4 million units, and if you count locally sourced peripherals, Chinese component makers stand to benefit handsomely from the booming IT industry at home.

Yet as a whole, China's component suppliers are keener than ever to do export business. The reasons are basic: finished product makers, particularly in the TV-receiver business, aren't paying their bills on time.or at all; oversupply of many general-use components is depressing domestic prices; makers of finished products such as TV receivers and VCD players who are enduring vicious price slashing are insisting on cheaper components; and local governments are pressing suppliers to take overseas business, even if it's not profitable, in order to avoid lay-offs.

This report offers insight into the key factors that will impact components supply in China in 1998 and the first half of 1999. We examine dynamic southern China in detail (see "Guangdong province: Components export engine"); China's emerging role as an IC source (see "China: Mainstream IC supplier by 2000?"); and analyze supply trends for CRTs, capacitors, potentiometers, sensors and materials.
