Their FUD was successful enough to derail X2...

W.F.Rakecky wonders, "...think this derailment led to the sale of USRX?"

Not a bit. I suspect that the discussion of the possible merger was going on while the 56K modems were in the announced but not ready stage.

If I remember the timing right, it was Rockwell which released to the world that they were thinking about it, and then USR responded, saying that they expected to have product shortly. Both companies must have been working in secret for a while, since both managed to ship product shortly thereafter... but I will point out that even though Rockwell announced first, USR shipped first, and seemed to work better first, too, so they could have been considered to be ahead.

If you look back at the SI discussion of the time, we all saw that

(a) USRX had better product... out faster and working better,
(b) Rockwell had a much better propaganda engine, and seemed to be successful in confusing the marketplace, and
(c) Whether we liked it or not, the marketplace was indeed confused, and USR didn't get the pickup that we thought it deserved.

All this before the merger, which then changed everything.
