"I want to make it clear that Belgium has no intention of selling any more gold"

According to CRB news, the reason for today's drop was rumor that Belgium was about to sell more gold.

John: As you point out, the proposed head of the ECB is Mr. Duisenberg of Holland. I had Belgium in mind for some reason. Thanks for correcting me. This detail does not change the essence of my point in that in so far as gold is concerned, Holland too has been a net seller. Haven't heard of France selling any or even talking about it. So it is difficult to say, who might be the better chairman of the ECB
As there is a great deal of fuss made who gets the appointment, I suspect it may matter somewhat.
