I can probably shed some light on the "how nice is too nice for" an office concern, as we have the same low-cost mentality that go2net has.

At SI headquarters in Kansas, we have 2000 sq. feet of office space for only a few employees. The space includes a pool table, couches, a big screen TV, and exercise equipment. Most people would think that's pretty lavish for a scrappy internet operation. But we *live* here. We're usually here from 10am in the morning until 3am the following morning. Apartments are used solely for sleeping.

go2net people work very long hours too. As such, I suspect the work environment doubles as living quarters for many. The effect of an active/pleasant environment is that the lines between work and "home-life" become blurred. It's the exact opposite of the Dilbert work environment, where drones in cubicles spend half their time daydreaming that the clock is pointing to 5pm.

An expensive office environment may add a few percentage points to the budget, but the productivity gains, employee retention, etc... are much more substantial.
