Ericsson Gives IP Faxing, Telephony a Booster Shot

May 4, 1998

PC Week via NewsEdge Corporation : Pushing IP-based voice and fax services further along the evolution chain, Ericsson Network Systems and Delta Three Inc. last week unveiled a jointly developed low-latency PC-based technology for Internet telephony.

IP Telephony Solution for Carriers is designed for service providers as a gateway between the conventional telephone network and the Internet or private IP networks, said officials at both companies.

Delta Three, a New York-based provider of managed private IP networks, has installed the platform in its managed IP network and is using the technology to complete international IP calls among the United States, the United Kingdom and Israel, said Elie Wurtman, CEO of Delta Three, a subsidiary of RSL Communications Ltd., in Hamilton, Bermuda.

Delta Three will also install the platform in each of its 19 points of presence around the world.

Ericsson will co-market the platform to other providers interested in either installing the platform in their own networks or in buying wholesale minutes of IP transport on Delta Three's enhanced IP network, Wurtman said.

The software, which runs on servers with Intel Corp. processors, optimizes transmission of voice and fax signals on IP networks by reducing network latency to less than 100 milliseconds. Adding to the performance boost, the technology offers improved coding and decoding functions and call processing times required to establish a connection over an IP network, said officials at the companies.

The IP telephony platform will be the basis for future enhanced services bridging the public telephone network and the Internet.

The platform is available now, said Ericsson officials in Richardson, Texas. Prices for the platform vary by customer.

>>With the arrival of VoIP, however, this interest will undergo a rebirth, and new equipment standards and products will again focus on the analog side of the equation once again. Keep your eyes open for analog and digital test set manufacturers who specialize in VoIP test and measurement! <<

Frank,

Wonder if manufacturers might find a nice recipe by watching what's cooking at Cisco...

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 1998--Cisco Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CSCO) today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately-held CLASS Data Systems of Ra'anana, Israel and Cupertino, California. CLASS Data's software solutions enable policy-based quality of service in Internet Protocol (IP) networks.
Under the terms of the acquisition, shares of Cisco common stock and cash with an aggregate value of $50 million will be exchanged for all outstanding shares and options of CLASS Data. In connection with the acquisition, Cisco expects a one-time charge against after-tax earnings of between $.02 and $.04 per share for purchased in-process research and development expenses in the fourth fiscal quarter of 1998. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the beginning of June and is subject to certain closing conditions. This represents Cisco's first acquisition of a company in Israel.

Cisco Increases Leadership in Policy Networking

As networks become more complex, enterprise customers are looking to establish quality of service across IP networks using policy networking, an architecture that gives network administrators the ability to classify and prioritize network data traffic. This acquisition enhances the recently announced CiscoAssure Policy Networking initiative and will enable Cisco to offer quality of service as an end-to-end network solution.

CLASS Data's products give network managers the ability to allocate network resources according to company policies and priorities. Such control capabilities mean business-critical applications are assured timely, high-quality network transport.

CLASS Data has 34 employees and was founded in 1996. CLASS Data's engineering team will remain in Israel and will become part of Cisco's Enterprise line of business. Arad Naveh, CLASS Data's President and CEO, and his marketing team will be located in San Jose.
