Not only do they swim well, they're incredibly flexible and resilient. I accidentally ran over my cat a few years ago. She was napping in the afternoon on the driveway, behind one of the passenger-side wheels of my car. Backing out of the driveway, I felt a weird "lump" and heard a terrifying shriek.

Naturally, I was mortified and rushed her to the vet. He looked her over and said everything was fine; nothing damaged, nothing broken. She hobbled around for a few days as if sore or having suffered a sprained muscle, but recovered quickly.
