Excellent post, Peter.

LU paid a hefty price for YURI, and it won't be soon before anyone can determine if it was a smart move. It may put pressure on smaller networkers, but it may also make FORE (or XYLN, or others) more attractive targets for takeover to compete with Lucent's anticipated success.

I seem to remember reading an article a few years ago that concluded that Cisco was screwed because all they did well was routers, and everyone else was developing switching.

Concerning your installation, can you give us some details without getting too technical? I am wondering where you are short of bandwith, and what sort of individual port speeds you have? Is your bandwidth getting used up by increasing size or more bandwidth intensive applications?
