Ref:Dell Strategy-I beg to differ on one point.

Dell has 4 major legs to its strategy. The first is to sell computers directly to its customers. With the exception of its superstore experiment, Dell has never deviated from this strategy..

Sig:

I don't think this is quite accurate, I believe they have experimented selling DELL via channels once before a few years ago only to find out that it was a disaster. But they quickly learned their lesson and moved away from it taking corrective measures immediately.

I believe making mistakes on the way and learning from it and then correcting the error of their ways is the mark of a great company.
Heck even Coke had their share of goof-ups,remember the 'NEW COKE'!

Thanks Sig, that was a great overview! I found this section dealing with weakness to be really fascinating, mainly because the study could find so dew weaknesses:

wgss.com

Briefly, the study found only two weakness. The first (reliance on other's R&D -- largely Intel and Microsoft)in my opinion is really a strength, and was discussed at some length in the HBR article. This second is the company's vulnerability to executive turnover if the stock market falters for a sustained period of time.

Highly recommended weekend reading for the Dellheads,
