The article may be much better news than it appears at first glance. I don't know what kind of a system Hitachi uses for back up and disaster recovery, but we know whose switches IBM uses - at least in their Global Services division.

I read a recent estimate that IBM's networking business is about $2 - 4 Billion per year. It is interesting in the article that the IT manager interviewed said they were not competitive because their technology was dated. It would appear that they have made the decision to go with FC interconnects to be more competitive.
