Actually SEEK is rated as the #1 SE by someone on Search Engine Watch(I forget who)

As for who does what ...heck I doubt MSFT will do any deals. They are starting their own portal START this summer with INKTOMI as their SE.

They may sign some deal with a teleco cableco. And don't forget MSNBC.

Content is king going forward. I expect there to 3 or four major portals each allied with a major television network, hopefully a browser, Search Engine, and teleco or cableco acting as ISP.

Only time will tell how it plays out. The next round of deals will probably gives a clearer picture.(and a clearer picture of where the stocks are going)

Excellent thoughts -- the thing left out of most of the Lycos imaginings, however, is the role of CMG and its 25 companies. No one but Wetherall knows what his goals really are, and he controls 42% of the voting stock of lycos. Is he looking to build and spin off or build a conglomerate where CMG maintains a sum greater than the parts.
I don't know -- but it should be factored into the equation.

RE: Best search engine -- that term can mean many different things to different people -- best technically, best commercially -- best pricewise -- best or biggest database -- best cause I like it.

RE: wait til next year -- Everybody talks as if # 1-4 were decided already. In this area of technology -- that could change this afternoon. a decision by compaq, GE, Toyota, Phillips to play in the game with the right ad budget, and it changes overnight. Long term the WAVOs will even out, short term its a steep rollercoaster (except for those of us in low and enjoying the ride.
