Press Release...
Technology Firms To Develop Demonstration Work Plans for Demonstrating Alternatives for Disposal of Assembled Chemical Weapons
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
May 1, 1998
Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD

Mr. Michael Parker, Program Manager for the Assembled Chemical Weapons Assessment (ACWA) program, announced today the award of task orders to the following six technology firms to develop demonstration work plans for demonstrating alternatives for the disposal of assembled chemical weapons:

AEA Technology
Burns and Roe
General Atomics
Lockheed Martin
Parsons
Teledyne Commodore

Today marks an important stage in the progression toward demonstration of alternative technologies required by the 1997 Defense Appropriations Act for Fiscal Year 1997 (Public Law 104-208), allocating $40 million to identify and demonstrate, not less than two alternatives to the baseline incineration process for disposal of explosive-filled rockets, mines and projectiles in the U.S. chemical weapons stockpile.

These six firms will draft demonstration work plans for Department of Defense technical review. Firms passing the next evaluation phase will move on to the demonstration phase of the program beginning this summer.

The Program Manager is committed to including stakeholder involvement throughout the entire assessment. A stakeholder group, called the Dialogue, is made up of citizens from the nine stockpile communities; federal, state and tribal regulators; representatives of national interest groups, appropriate U.S. EPA staff and DOD representatives from the ACWA program.

For additional information on the Dialogue and ACWA, please contact Ann Gallegos, Public Outreach Team, at (410) 671-4345 or visit the web site at dialogue.pmacwa.org.

Now we go! Good luck all.

Steve
