I agree, Nancy, the movie "Silkwood" scared me completely. I have always been very skeptical about a lot of things since then. Very sinister.

As far as mad cow disease in particular, I am very concerned about it. It would be a very rare occasion when I eat beef, not only because I am trying to live up to Linda McCartney's vegetarian ideals (it is a struggle!), but because I think American cattle are fed all sorts of garbage which makes almost everyone who eats them sick somehow.

Farmers want to use the cheapest feed available, and that is often mixed processed animal parts, including brains. From my understanding, this is what causes mad cow disease. I believe it is only a matter of time before it shows up here.

I think on a larger level, there are so many people who want to eat meat, and meat is so expensive to produce compared to vegetable products, that the supply will become more and more contaminated as time goes on. America's laws on meat production are quite a bit more lax than Europe's, for example. The people who are making the profit are motivated to be very sloppy, jeopardizing the public health.
