>>>PSC Inc. (PCSX:Nasdaq) is targeting the supermarket
cashier as the next casualty of the tech revolution. A leader
in George Bush-baffling barcode scanners, PSC is rolling
out its U-Scan series of scanners that let shoppers scan
their own purchases.

What might this do to OPMRF?

First of all...let us not couple Pscx with U Scan.. OPMRF owns U scan and I don't think Pscx was able to acquire exclusive distribution as it didn't meet target sales. Rumors are abound that IBM will be a reseller which not only leaves PSCX out in the cold but directly competes. The big winner is OPMRF. This is already reflected in stock price movement...opmrf has moved 6 times higher in the past year while PSCX has dropped 10%. Both should benefit from Walmart but clearly OPMRF will be the biggest winner as their revenues will move several times higher. Even if Ncr release comes later this year, they are 2 years behind optimal.. Actually it would make more sense for ncr to buyout optimal than go directly in competition with them. If taken at $20/share optimal buyout would cost only $150 million minus the $14 million in cash. Not bad for a company to earn at least .40/share in 1998. The only thing keeping a lid on price of opmrf is lack of public understanding (only 1 analyst following the company) and a recent rapid rise is stock price making further move up somewhat treacherous.
In any event, watch for dramatic rise after greater exposure in the media once IBM and Walmart come on board.
