Ann, be very careful. You can make your setup unusable if you change video settings wrong. The DirectX driver won't in itself affect your depth or resolution. Try this first, to protect yourself. Go to the Display Property sheet and click the Settings tab, as Zeuspaul described (you can also get to Display Properties by right-clicking the desktop and choosing Properties). On that tab you should see your current resolution and color depth. The resolution will be something like 800 x 600 pixels, or something. The color depth will be something like 256 colors. The color depth is probably the problem. 16-bit depth is 65536 colors. Fortunately this is also the safest to change. Pull down the palate drop down list and choose 65536 if it appears. If it doesn't appear, your video board won't support it (but most will nowadays). If it does appear, select it, and NOTE if your resolution changes from what it was. If it does, you will resize your desktop if you continue, which is getting a bit riskier. If it doesn't, you can probably proceed without much risk (though this is all a bit risky). If you have a Test button, click it. If Test produces a display you can see, your in good shape. If not, it will revert to your previous settings. In that case, click CANCEL and post back here for more help. If you don't have a TEST button, and you decide to proceed, be sure you've written down the original color depth and resolution, then click Apply. If you have NOT changed resolution, you shouldn't have to reboot. If you have, you may or may not have to depending on your driver and card. Maybe you'd like to post your settings, your video card type (e.g., ATI Xpression, including video memory size, that's important), and monitor model here before risking this, because if you lose your video you can't post back for help easily. We can probably take a guess as to whether it's likely to work ok or not. Of course by now maybe you've already done it and are playing away! Good luck, Spots
