Gates pays record $30 million for U.S painting 10:06 a.m. May 05, 1998 Eastern NEW YORK (Reuters) - Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates paid a record $30 million for an American painting when he bought the last major seascape by Winslow Homer left in private hands, The New York Times reported Tuesday. The newspaper said that according to several experts in American paintings, Gates purchased ''Lost on the Grand Banks'' at a recent private sale shrouded in secrecy.
