Allan, Gordy in Hawaii here....just got off the phone with Schwab....they have the highest commissions in the biz just about....BUT the best customer service.....you can open an online account with them at 1-800-435-4000. They give you three business days to get the cash into your account, once it's established. Hope this is helpful.

Allan.. try wiring your money in to DLJ for the short term and follow-up with their wire department to confirm receipt. Then tell the broker the $$ are there and they might let you buy. I've had times with them on stocks, including DGIV, that when the demand starts increasing they make it difficult to buy. Kinda like they want it all for themselves?? Long term, try E*Trade.
