Paul, I guess we disagree. Some used beads as exchange, some bartered. Metals allowed for easy coinage where the value was backed by the imprimatur. Paper just makes the coining process easier. You can't eat gold, who will set the value? If you tell me it's just an exchange vehicle, then I would argue that chickens are more liquid in time of crises. Now if holding physical gold gives someone a touchie-feelie, go for it, but then they still need a gun IMO.
