A History of Power : SI ....cont'd.... OZ, Vertiginous Heights The building known as Vertiginous Heights was large. Several other houses and buildings were maintained in the compound but everything centered around the big house. The several wings of the house provided ample space for the people and families who lived there. The extensive grounds contained many treasures, independent of each other. In addition to the Japanese Garden, there was several groves of nut bearing trees, orchards, herb gardens (Emerald Green was acknowledged for the quality of it's pesto) the lake, an extensive flower cutting garden and a large water garden. A small staff attended to the house and grounds but most duties devolved on robots. "Jill, Jon, welcome, come with me please, Brad and Jeff will be down shortly. I have been asked to serve you refreshments, this way please. " The small ovoid robot moved off through a doorway into a large hall and they followed, passing through this room they entered a smaller room looking out over the Japanese Garden. "Your bags will be sent up to the guest house right away Jill, I hope you don't mind meeting with Dryers immediately ?" the small robot intoned, the voice was actually an extension of DS345, the OZ control biosoft, otherwise known as Charles. "No Charles, I am fine with the meeting.", Jill replied, let Brad and Jeff know Jon will be sitting in as well. Get me a drink will you ?" "Certainly Jill, though Brad has taken the liberty of ordering everything already." Jill frowned, then laughed, "Not again" The small robot bobbed once, then continued, "I think you might like it." The door slid back just then and a beautiful young lady appeared wearing a gray spandex outfit, her short brown hair was cut page boy style, she carried a tray bearing several tall frosted glasses. Brad and Jeff followed her in and Jeff began introductions after putting down the large covered tray he was carrying. Jill learned that the young lady was Helen M, the head of House Security, she appeared to know Jon. Jill understood the concept that Brad propagated by deciding what everyone was going to try. People were not likely to try new things if you didn't make them. Hospitality at OZ was always replete with new things, food and drink were primary testing grounds. "Food is basic" Brad would say "so it affects peoples attitudes to all new things." Supper was an extended affair with little conversation as each course was served. The Arabic coffee served after supper was strongly flavored with cardamom and sugar, and not really to Jill's taste, she decided to endure, needing the caffeine, and she knew no regular java would be forthcoming.
