Dear Christine,

<are you saying that we are doing good works when we
respond to Emile--that he himself suspects he is misguided, and needs
us somehow to provide counterpoint?>

No, not at all.

<Or are you saying that he is
simply a provocateur, and that there is no way he can be reached, and
that it is a waste of time to try?>

Yes. But more than a provocateur. He feeds on the energy created by our responses...more specifically he is like an energy vampire.

Without what he considers to be the sins of others, and others defending those "sins," he would wither away. His concept of self, his figment I called it, must prevail, and to do so it must have conflict, something other than itself.

I also said that I thought this was sad, as well as destructive. Emile has it set up so that he is right. However, he is "dead right," for he has sacrificed his aliveness in the service of being right.

For instance, think of the ways in which most of us here have come to know each other as vibrant, alive human beings. We know things about each others work, our families, our meals, our hobbies, our humor, our health and emotional challenges, plans and dreams, our fears and hopes.... We can place our politics, our spirituality, our certainties and our doubts within the context of our whole lives. Sure, there is often conflict but this is part of group dynamics.

But this kind of participation is not for Emile. You must have noticed this. Emile presents himself in a way that when one reaches out to touch him the hand passes right through the image. Being right is a lonely job, but I guess someone has to do it.

Best,
cd
