Steve, It looks like MSFT is making a big push, to squish RNWK,like a bug. I am betting the bug is tougher to kill, and the exterminator, has a bug that is resistant to it.

Although both Microsoft and RealNetworks give the client away for free, the player can be an important tool in establishing mindshare. Since Media Player will soon be included in the Windows operating system, Microsoft may finally be in the driver's seat in the multimedia streaming market.

"This integrated approach to receiving video from other sources easily and quickly" gives Microsoft an advantage over RealNetworks, Miles said. "However, RealNetworks has more than 80 percent of the Net viewers, according to their download figures."

Miles compared the NetShow-G2 rivalry to the one between the VHS and Beta formats, which was ultimately decided by ubiquity rather than technological superiority.

In the long term, Microsoft is positioning itself for computer-television convergence, Miles said. With Federal Communications Commission rules that will transition TV to the digital realm within several years, Microsoft is seeking to become the "broadcast operating system" of television in the long term.
Here's to RealAudio, and LiquidAudio kicking some MSFT ass.
