It really is dependent on the specific field. I used to sell information systems to the major oil companies which helped them track every document from every heir on every lease they were involved with, this process is called "division order" in oil parlance. Some leases I was aware of tracked to the 1/256th....Example: just imagine one producing field, discovered in the early 30's-40's with say 20 initial owners. As time goes on, the property and rights are passed on and subdivided through marriages, wills etc.

The specific E&P company will have that info for you. Just call the Division Order or LandOwner Relations office, every E&P has one. Finally, in Texas, this activity is regulated and monitored by the Texas Railroad Commission. I'm not certain but in LA, it maybe the Land Commission.
