Informix Corp. (IFMX) on Thursday soundly beat Street estimates in its first quarter, reporting a profit of $4.9 million, or $0.03 per share, on sales of $167.2 million.

First Call consensus expected the database software developer to lose $0.03 per share in the quarter.

Informix shares trimmed $0.19 per share to $9.88 on volume of 6.9 million shares.

"The first quarter was a period of solid progress for Informix in a number of areas," said chief executive Bob Finocchio in a prepared release. "Although I am pleased with our progress, there is certainly more work to do in building the new Informix."

The $167.2 million in sales represents a 12 percent improvement from the $149 million reported in the year-ago quarter when Informix lost $144 million, or $0.68 per share.

Analysts expect the company to be profitable for the rest of the year, earning a penny per share in the second and third quarters and $0.07 per share in the fourth quarter.

However, 12 or the 15 institutional brokerage firms following the stock maintain either a "hold" or "sell" recommendation.

Informix recently made several significant product announcements including the broadening of its data warehousing solutions with a new version of the Advanced Decision Support Option(tm) and MetaCube(tm) ROLAP Option 4.0.

Last quarter, Informix surprised analysts by posting a profit of $0.05 per share when First Call consensus was expecting a loss of $0.16 per share in the quarter.

Paul won't buy DELL since they "insist" on putting WinnT or windows on it. Hugh? I won't buy a server without an OS installed -- dues SUNW sell servers without OS? Do they sell it with Linux? AIX? my choice of operating system? SCO? WinNT? lots of reasons not to buy something, but his didn't make sense to me.
