Tim:

I, for one, appreciate your post and wish you the best.

Three wishes:

1. Explain the availability of shorts.

2. Send special letter of explanation when monthly statements are incorrect or odd, such as that change in balance from end of month to beginning of next month.

3. Respond promptly to substantive questions posted that are of a general nature, and respond promptly to private messages and email.

Peter Michaelson

Tim
Thanks for listening to our suggestions.
1.Mail out confirmations the night of the transaction. Sometimes I get them 20 days late. Or I don't get some at all and have to ask for another copy. I am in Montana.
2. Work at improving your monthly statements. They are very late and many times not in agreement with the online account. Also interest charged is usually not even close. For me this goes back to August or September. I live with it as a cost to do business.
3. Get the checks in the mail! I signed up for check writing the first day it was offered (February 1st). And still waiting.
4. Please don't be in such a hurry to blame the customer.
I do wish Datek the best of business. I get very good fills at Datek.

My top three:

1. ANSWER THE PHONES.

There should be a *separate* phone number for "emergency trades". I don't want to have to call the same number that is used for customer service on the rare occasion when I have to place a trade by phone. One number for trades, one number for customer service. Oh, yeah, it *would* be nice if you'd answer the customer service phones, too...

2. TRAIN YOUR CUSTOMER REPS

They need to know your policies and procedures inside and out. Asking the same question of three reps should net ONE answer, NOT three.

3. ANTICIPATE DEMAND, DON'T CHASE IT!

Don't buy equipment, bandwidth, etc. in reaction to customer demand. Be ahead of the curve.

And, if I might cheat, and add..

3 1/2. That stupid Dilbert Ticker was A Mistake, and highly unprofessional. I suppose you are stuck with contracts with the Dilbert Zone and Yahoo, but please don't every do something this dumb again.

Here are the four things that would make Datek better for me..

1. Continuous Real-time quotes / charts
2. trade nasdaq in 1/64 increments like other brokerages allow
3. otc - bb stocks
4. buy before/after market

I know thats four, sorry.

My top 3 changes:

1. Continue to improve wires. I have not had a problem recently but a friend is still experiencing problems.

2. Revamp your 1098. Yours is very confusing. The form I get from other brokers does not break down each individual trade as yours does but rather lists a lump sum of total stock purchases and total stock sales, whether it be margin or not. This easily identifies your gain or loss.

3. I think you should give at least 2 free trades when you make a mistake. If your market order takes more than 1 minute...two free trades. I would also give two free trades when a person orders a specific number of shares, say 100, and he gets a smaller number, say 38. This would at least give the person a sense of getting something for Datek not performing as expected.

Finally, I want to commend you for your effort to improve. However I do feel that you and all of the other department managers at Datek should make a conscieous effort to give a brief status report of projects and problems at Datek on this thread at least twice a week. An example would be check writing. In early Feb. 98 you asked us to sign up. We did!!! I believe it was late Mar. 98 when you told us the hold up was with the check printing. It is now early May and no new status report, to my recollection, and no checks. This is just one example of many. Please just let us know what is going on. Most of us will be appeased.

Thank You,
Brian
