>>CPQ lost 1 customer

The guys claims to be a computer programmer, yet in two months he can't figure out or at least try the bios configuration. Even a computer neophyte like myself would have probably fixed that problem in a couple of hours.

Mark:

One of my department supports the company ECAD tools. You need to know that the tools suppliers are in the middle of transition to NT boxes. Two years ago, you could not finmd too many ECAD that runs on a PC, especially the tools needed to do heavy Mechanical, SPICE simulations, Synthesis and Place&Route. We are only partially switched to PC/NT and probably take a year or two to complete.

Cheers

Compaq (like everyone in the industry) had been using Sun workstation for EAD (electronic design work) because there was simply no comparable software in the NT world. CPQ and MSFT have jointly sponsored work at the three largest EAD companies to get those software tools onto NT. CPQ has been aggressively replacing their SUN EAD systems with CPQ professional workstations, in some cases using beta SW to get the job done. They had targeted end of 1Q98 to completely eliminate SUN but I don't know if they have actually phased out the last Sun systems yet.
A similar story on big database machines - 3 years ago CPQ ran their inventory control on a pair of HP9000 T500 machines, they replaced them with Proliants and the HP machines were moved out in 1997.
CPQ is a big believer in eating their own dog food but in some cases the industry has not fully converted to NT / Wintel.
