Back In The Black: Informix Posts Net Profit

After suffering a disastrous loss a year ago, Informix saw a healthy boost in its first-quarter numbers, according to results released yesterday. The Menlo Park, Calif., database vendor reported a net profit of $4.9 million, a gain of 3 cents per share, compared to a net loss of $144.2 million, and a loss of 95 cents per share in last year's first quarter. Revenue for the quarter totaled $167.2 million, up 12.1% from last year's $149.2 million.

"We've done a good job at reducing our costs," says Bob Finocchio, CEO of Informix. "In the fourth quarter, we had an expense run-rate of $170 million, which decreased about $5 million to $164.5 million in the first quarter. But we do not intend to improve our operating costs by continuing to reduce." Finocchio says he sees opportunities for Informix in selling "high-performance OLTP."

Informix also touted a string of new customers acquired during the first quarter. Hastings Entertainment, a multimedia entertainment retailer, purchased Informix's database technology for use with future applications. John H. Harland, a supplier of checks, database marketing services, and loan-automation software to the financial industry, chose Dynamic Server with Universal Data Option and Extended Parallel Option to run a variety of new applications, including an enterprisewide data warehouse. Intertainer, a Los Angeles entertainment content provider, also selected Informix Dynamic Server with Universal Data Option to run an interactive TV application.

Anecdotally, I think he's pretty rotten. I have no idea what his actual stats are, although it seems the companies he follows don't do too well, stock-wise.
