Ascend To Unveil New Pdts, Push In Virtual
Pvt Networks Mkt

By Mark Boslet

PALO ALTO (Dow Jones)--Ascend Communications Inc. (ASND) will
unveil on Monday new products and a strategy to broaden its offerings in
the virtual private networking market.

Virtual private networks are dedicated communications tunnels, or avenues,
set up across public and private computer networks to assure higher quality
service.

"This is a huge market" that is starting to take off this year and which will
"explode" in 1999, said Kurt Bauer, Ascend's vice president of access
product management.

Ascend will announce two software products designed to let network
managers better control, examine and receive reports on the performance
of virtual private networks.

A third product, designed to work with Ascend's IP Navigator software,
will enable Internet protocol-based virtual private networks on networks of
frame-relay and ATM, or asynchronous transfer mode, switches.

The three products will be available this summer, Bauer said.
