I seem to recall several other development tools that are controlled by standards bodies or a single developer other than Microsoft. None have faired all that well.

I don't know of any under ISO which is IMHO the number one standard body in the world.
Without ISO the networks would be in mayhem and the internet wouldn't work as good as it does now. Just imagine what would have happen if their wasn't TCP/IP ISO standard. Just think about it. UNIX systems can communicate with Windows which can communicate with OS/2 and every other OS that adheres to TCP/IP standard. You can thank the ISO for that.

Standards are good for the consumer but bad for a company who wants to lock the consumer into its product. It is extremely important in software companies not to have a standard. If the consumer is unsatisfied with that software product it causes major grief and expense to change so usually in the end they stick with the weaker product. So at the end of the day the better product will not win market share. MS is a very good example of this. Look how every year or two they release a new version of its OS. How come they can't just fix the last release with a OSR. I have come to this conclusion years ago that it's not in the best interest for M$ to make a good product since they will not generate EPS.
