Come on now. They haven't raised the bid yet but by a paltry
few pennies. We need ASND to spread its wings today.

P.S: KTEL bid goes up by 10. I thought the markets were getting
smarter.

Ascend Accelerates Market Adoption of Virtual Private
Networks With Breakthrough MultiVPN Strategy

Business Wire - May 04, 1998 08:51

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 1998--

Ascend Solutions Move VPN Deployment Beyond Conventional Tunneling for
Enterprise and Service Provider Networks

Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND) today announced its
MultiVPN(TM) (virtual private network) strategy designed to advance the VPN
market by addressing the key concerns of both service providers and enterprise
subscribers. MultiVPN enables the utilization of the public network infrastructure
for private enterprise communications with management capabilities, assured
levels of service and availability, and compatibility and security through a
provider/subscriber architecture. By encompassing Internet protocol (IP),
asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) and frame relay (FR) technologies,
Ascend's MultiVPN strategy supercedes the traditional approach to VPNs with
value-added services and comprehensive solutions that leverage the entire
Ascend product line.

"Through our MultiVPN strategy, we are enabling the enterprise to build VPNs
with best-of-breed IP, ATM and frame relay solutions as well as enabling the
service provider to deliver VPN services with assured management,
compatibility and availability," said Kurt Bauer, Vice President, Access pro duct
management for Ascend Communications. "Together, our flexible
provider/subscriber framework, robust technology, and unequaled service and
management capabilities distinguish Ascend's approach to VPNs, and poise the
company to accelerate adoption of VPNs worldwide."

Until now, enterprise hurdles to VPN deployment have included inadequate
manageability, lack of availability/Service Level Agreements (SLAs),
incomplete application compatibility and unacceptable security deficiencies.
MultiVPN overcomes these challenges with a continuum of key products and
services. Issues faced by service providers when deploying VPN services have
included billing, service creation, provisioning, client network management,
Quality of Service (QoS) and high-availability services/SLAs. Again, MultiVPN
overcomes these deployment and administration hurdles with comprehensive
management capabilities and guaranteed service levels. With MultiVPN, both
the enterprise and the service provider utilize Virtual Private Remote
Networking (VPRN), Virtual Private Trunking (VPT), and Virtual IP Routing
(VIPR).

-- VPRN -- creates multi-protocol VPNs via the Internet;

-- VPT -- uses VPN technology to assure FR and ATM service
availability and optimizes trunk bandwidth to ensure SLA
performance even during periods of heavy congestion;

-- VIPR -- extends the enterprise private IP environment over public
network services by creating virtual routing environments for
each subscriber. Each routing environment can also deliver QoS
capability using IP Navigator. (For technical details on this
capability, please see the IP Navigator with Virtual Private
Routing release.)

VPRN, VPT and VIPR work with the Navis(TM) family of network and service
management products -- a key element of Ascend's MultiVPN strategy -- to
enable the service provider and enterprise with integrated private and VPN
management. (For additional technical details, please reference the NavisXtend
CNM Gateway/SLA release.)

"Ascend is redefining VPNs to move beyond conventional tunneling with
comprehensive solutions that are being widely embraced by service providers
and enterprises," said Deb Mielke, Senior Broadband Consultant, TeleChoice,
Inc. "Their MultiVPN strategy leverages two critical success factors -- the
growing presence of the company's access products throughout the enterprise
and Ascend's recognized leadership on the infrastructure side with core
networking products that continue to be widely adopted by service providers
across the globe."

Ascend's approach to VPNs has been positively received by both service
provider and enterprise customers. To date, forward-thinking organizations,
including Frontier and ISDNet, have initiated early deployment of Ascend's
MultiVPN solutions. (Further details are available in the Frontier and ISDNet
press releases.)

Frontier to Deploy Ascend's IP Navigator Software

Allows Frame Relay Network to Carry Internet Traffic

Business Wire - May 04, 1998 08:48

ALAMEDA, Calif. & ROCHESTER, N.Y.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 1998--
Frontier Corporation (NYSE:FRO) announced today that it will deploy IP Navigator
software by Ascend Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:ASND) on its Frame Relay
network of B-STDX Multiservice Frame Relay switches. With IP Navigator, Frontier
can carry both data applications and Internet traffic over the same network, resulting in
greater network flexibility, reliability and speed for Frontier's business customers.

"Offering customers IP routing over Frame Relay capability is another indication of our
commitment to provide them with the most advanced data services," said Michael A.
Coghill, Frontier's Vice President of Network Operations. "IP Navigator gives us the
same level of network intelligence that traditionally required the installation of additional
routing equipment at every single switch. Eliminating the need for that equipment greatly
improves our speed and reliability -- there are simply fewer links in the chain."

"We are pleased that Frontier has selected IP Navigator to add value to its network," said
Prabhu Kavi, IP Business Marketing Manager, Core Systems Division, Ascend
Communications, Inc. "IP Navigator gives Frontier the unique ability to extend
multiservice WAN switching support for Frame Relay and ATM to include IP as an
additional service. That's an important differentiator."

Ascend today also announced MultiVPN, a comprehensive strategy for delivering Frame
Relay, ATM, and IP and tunnel-based VPNs over the same infrastructure and all
manageable by Ascend's Navis products. This industry-first capability enables service
providers to differentiate themselves from competitors by creating highly-tailored VPN
services for their customers.

Frontier will use IP Navigator with new Virtual Private Network (VPN) Routing
capability, which is part of Ascend's MultiVPN announcement. IP Navigator with VPN
Routing will allow Frontier to offer customers autonomous "private" networks that
actually exist on the public network. These virtual networks eliminate the capital
expenditures required to establish and maintain a private network. Frontier customers
pay only for the services they need and receive the same level of security and quality of
service as a conventional private network.
