Great News - Another BETA Hit!

Gerald,

Thanks for the news alert! Another hit and base runner for BETA. Love these slow moving ball games. Could there be a grand slam homer in the future? There are plenty of innings left so sit back, relax and enjoy the experience.

I believe that I see something happening in the warm up area of Team TASA. Re-read this quote contained in the recent release

BETA President Michael D. Beck added, ''We provide custom assessment services directly to state education authorities as well as indirectly through the two largest commercial contractors in the contract/customized assessment market: National Computer Systems and Harcourt Brace."

Who are these players and what are their stats. Let's take a look at the back of their baseball cards.

They appear to be some heavy hitters with great batting averages.

Here are some excerpts from Harcourt General press release which I believe is the team owner or holding company of Harcourt Brace and ICS Learning Systems.

Harcourt General Names Massachusetts Commissioner of Education to Lead Its Distance Learning Business

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 4, 1998--Harcourt General, Inc. (NYSE:H - news) announced today that Robert V. Antonucci, the commissioner of education for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, has been appointed president of ICS Learning Systems, one of the world's premier distance learning companies.

Effective March 2, 1998, Dr. Antonucci will assume leadership of the Scranton, Pa.-based international education company, which annually serves 400,000 students worldwide. He succeeds Gary Keisling, who retired in 1997. Harcourt General's Harcourt Brace publishing subsidiary acquired ICS in June 1997.

Dr. Antonucci, 52, has been an educator for more than three decades, starting as a teacher in Lunenburg, Mass., and quickly advancing to administrative roles in Leominster and Falmouth, Mass. In March 1992, he was appointed Massachusetts' 21st commissioner of education, serving as the chief executive officer for the Commonwealth's Board of Education and as the chief state school officer for early childhood, elementary, secondary, vocational-technical and adult basic education.

''Harcourt Brace is extremely excited about the potential for distance learning from high school through college and continuing adult education, so our search for a leading professional educator to serve as ICS' next president was exhaustive and thorough,'' said Brian J. Knez, president and chief executive officer of Harcourt Brace. ''We wanted to identify an executive who has successfully managed a broad spectrum of academic programs and has demonstrated the executive leadership that will be required to enhance the credibility of ICS and to capitalize on the growth opportunities we envision for that business. Bob Antonucci's proven management skills, his coordination of job training programs, implementation of secondary and higher education strategies, and oversight of degree-granting bodies is the perfect background for the leadership we want at ICS,'' said Mr. Knez.

James P. Levy, president of Harcourt Brace's Education & Training and Learning & Assessment groups, said, ''As Massachusetts' commissioner of education, Dr. Antonucci has implemented the Education Reform Act of 1993, the landmark legislation that serves as a model for other states. Bob will bring to ICS Learning Systems the same innovation, creative thinking and determination to raise standards of learning that is evidenced in the Education Reform Act and throughout his career,'' said Mr. Levy.

Dr. Antonucci will report to John R. Dilworth, who is group vice president of Harcourt Brace's Learning & Assessment Group.

''It is exciting for me to continue in the field of education as part of a company like Harcourt Brace, which has a worldwide reputation for excellence in education,'' said Dr. Antonucci. ''I look forward to this challenge of helping to build one of the world's leading educational companies as a continuation of my work in the areas of education, business and technology.''

Dr. Antonucci received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Fitchburg (Mass.) State College, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Boston University, where he also is a member of the adjunct faculty. He serves on the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education, and is a member of the MIT Corporation, the board that oversees the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He and his wife, Jeanne, have two adult children.
