Here's what was written on a Flyer that came with my Electric Bill (Puget Sound Energy)

"Puget Sound Energy is embarking on a three-year project to install advanced remote meter reading technology to roughly 700,000 customers. This technology will help us to automatically detect outages and to respond more quickly. It also will provide our customers with more information on their energy usage, more flexible payment options and other enhanced services in the future. Installation of this new equipment will begin primarily in urban areas of Thurston county and will move northward.

How it works...

A small radio device within the electric or natural gas meter optically scans the meter and transmits data at regular intervals to a control unit, a breadbox sized device typically mounted on a utility pole. This control unit collects data from about 150 to 200 homes in a neighborhood. The data is then transmitted to another device which collects the information from the surrounding neighborhood control units. The information is then sent electronically to a central database.

I will try to call Puget Sound Energy to see if they know who the vendor is. This stuff is big. Every house in the country will eventually have on on these IMO...
