Wonder how long til QNTM/MKE decide the heads business is no place to be. Can you imagine them trying to develop GMR when they are still losing their shirts in MR? If they can't align their heads business with one of the leaders, they would be a whole lot better off following WDC's route. Its a good bet WDC won't be last to market with GMR.

RE: Interesting to see all this great thoughts on WDC and they are up 3/8 while
Quantum is up 1 3/8. I suppose it's a great idea for WDC to find somebodies else's
technology to buy since they can come up with anything of their own.

That's the beauty of it isn't it? Imagine if WDC had to use their own funds to do the R&D blah blah blah... The objective of mgt. is to make the best use of capital. WDC being a relatively big player is lucky that they got this technology from IBM. Then again IBM is lucky as well since for them to make best use of the capital they spent on their R&D the volumes of GMR heads needs to increase. Let WDC or BOB build drives with GMR as long as they build them. So on the face of it a win-win for both. And I would make the argument that for WDC the return is better. R&D ain't cheap. PP&E to build GMR ain't cheap as well!

What I guess is going on is big time churn with the stock price. Once over it will head higher (maybe) I'm not a TA person. Like you say mid-1999 is a way out.

Then again the main point for me is long term viability since I have conditioned myself with WDC to hold on for the next 5-6 quarters at least. This year is marginal, next year just got a lot better.

That's the important thing (to me).

Shane.
