Craig Porter, Chief Engineer

KRON is on track to broadcast DTV by Nov. 1, according to Porter. "Studio-wise, we're about 80% complete and transmitter wise, we're about 50-60% complete." Porter says NBC hasn't told him how they're going to deliver the HDTV signal - "I sense they're making it up as they go along."

The final piece to the puzzle is the selection and installation of the encoder and multi-plexer, but Porter was pleasantly surprised at the multitude of products at NAB. "We're going back and looking at all of our options." Porter didn't specify which brands.

With an estimated $8 million DTV budget, Porter says they're pretty much ready to go - "we have the 16X9 cameras, all the SDI routers, AS routers - we're ready to accept any format NBC gives us."
