Jim Gilbert, Director of Engineering

Since ABC made its announcement that it was moving towards 720p HDTV, Gilbert says the station has a better idea of the equipment needs, but they took care of many of the other essentials beforehand. "We're building a tower, we've ordered the transmitter, transmission line and antenna," he said. "The network group is reviewing the upconverter needs. We still plan on being on the air Nov. 1."

Gilbert says equipment issues are the biggest hurdle now. "There's not a lot of products out there in 720p, but as you know ABC has made a deal with Panasonic for 720p equipment. We probably won't see much until about mid-summer."

Gilbert says Snell & Wilcox and Tekniche have indicated their 720p converters will be ready in June. "We're also looking at ATSC boxes from Teirnan and Lucent, among others," Gilbert says. They're in the process of building a new digital plant, "but that would have happened regardless of the DTV plans," Gilbert said.

Gilbert commented on the flat panel display products at NAB98 and said once the prices become more reasonable for flat panel displays, HDTV will take off. "Not a lot of people have the room for those huge HDTV projection monitors that will be among the first HDTV sets available."
