enterpise sales don't go through the channel so to some extent who cares

The channel, possibly.

The Katt and Mr Cringely may well be indulging in a little fantasy here. The announcement of JBuilder 2 will certainly have left returnable Jbuilder 1 inventory out there, but it won't affect revenue, since revenue isn't recognized for product that is returnable.

But your "who cares" point is important - there will inevitably be less enthusiasm in the channel to stock the products of a company who is also your competitor for the customer's business. This is an aspect of the new "go-it-alone" strategy - together with setting up their own consulting business, with the same effect - that hasn't played out yet. "Full ahead both, bo'sun, and damn the torpedos" is a glamorous image, but it is also by definition a dangerous strategy.
