<< I am still waiting for some bear to legitimately make the case that 1999 will be worse than 1998 in this sector>>

And there's the rub. None of us can (although I wouldn't call myself a bear, just cautious.) There simply isn't enough forward visibility to read the future past a single quarter. AMAT will give some guidance in a week and they'll likely say: "orders down, layoffs/forced vacations, bad going forward for two qtrs, upturn in 99". And AMAT will rally on weak volume <g>.

The real issue to my mind now is whether or not the push to smaller feature sizes will be enough to give much (more) of an upward push. Ian makes a pretty strong case (and look at KLAC for further evidence) for this. I don't believe 300mm will be much of a factor until the 2nd half of 99.
