This is one of those where I feel bad for Gil. He said for years Apple had chartered exec. jets for the executives. He was an avid pilot and already owned his own jet. Why wouldn't he use it? Common sense would say of course he would just use his own and charge the normal expense to Apple. According to Gil, he charged LESS than cost for the use of the plane, and much less than apple normally paid to charter jets. I never knew any of this.

But you see a company that is on the doldrums should not be flying it's CEO from lake Tahoe. First of all, not moving to Cuppertino shows a lack of commitment, and secondly, when times are tough you cut deep, and you start by setting an example. This really goes to the core of my main criticism of him: he did not cut deep enough, including his own perks.

(Tell you what Gil, we get you a reserved parking spot if you give up your corporate jet).

Thanks Travis - 5/6/98 is expected by a AAPL employee to be "huge"

Sometimes the closer you are to something the less you know its value and this news may be already known , but it intrigues me .

Your answers from AG's book were most edifying , objective and appreciated .

If I may , on the NeXT acquisition , I understand E. Hancock was the prime mover . She knew of NeXT and Jobs from IBM , as Jim Cannavino IBM Sr. VP was trying to get IBM to buy it . He failed .

GA brought EH to AAPL from Nat. Semi . It was her decision to end Copland and rule out BE as Copland's replacement , along with GA's reluctance to give BE's CEO a board seat .

EH arranged for NeXT to be considered using a ruse that a un-named NeXT engineer started its review by AAPL through a routine phone call .

I suspect , but don't know , that S Jobs ousted her from AAPL's CTO position remembering she was against the IBM purchase of NeXT . She resigned with GA's dismissal .

If you feel this is not of general investor interest , please email me with your "intuitive" findings confirming or discounting the above . I again will be most grateful .

Thanks in advance,
Jim K.
