X86 PC PROCESSOR MARKET LOGS WEAKEST QUARTER In One-and-a-Half Years Sales Drop Below $5 Billion, Average Selling Prices Dip Below $200, According to New Report From Mercury Research SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Stiff competition in the growing low-cost computer market combined with excess inventories at some systems manufacturers depressed the x86 PC processor market to its lowest level in six quarters, according to a new report released today by Mercury Research, Inc. In the first quarter of '98, x86 PC processor vendors shipped $4.95 billion in chips, according to Mercury Research preliminary estimates. That figure is nearly 11 percent less than suppliers shipped in the first quarter of '97 and the lowest level since the third quarter of '96. As well, growing demand for sub-$1,000 systems -- along with stiff competition in that segment -- pushed average selling prices, or ASPs, for x86 PC processors to $195.32. That marks the first time that the industrywide ASP has fallen below $200 since the third quarter of '96. Although the industry's ASP dipped below $200, the overall ASP for Intel, which commands much higher ASPs than its competitors, remained above the $200 mark, according to Mercury Research preliminary estimates. The first-quarter market information is included in the latest edition of PC Processors and Chip Sets '98, a quarterly Market Strategy and Forecast Report from Mercury Research.
