The comparison with Japanese companies is very difficult.

The cultures are not the same and the markets, while converging over time, are quite different.

For example, there is essentially no job market - particularly with their economy in recession. Employees have little in the way of alternative employment (although the culture encourages company loyalty and identification).

Having worked extensively with the Japanese, I have a pretty good window on these things.

It is also interesting that some people still look towards the Japanese business model as superior to ours.

Japan will recover, but their lack of encouragement for risk taking limits them, IMO.
