I'm just giving an opinion just like MS is giving an opinion. ( I'm
not trying to be testy, mind you, it just reads like that.)
My opinion is that the market for heads is still there and WDC has another supplier. My guess is that GMR heads will not be overflowing from the IBM factory at $8 a pop, and their use would be limited to
the WDC top-of-line (which is not high end, just upper range).
So they can make a slimline 6 gig 3" drive or whatever. I think the
implications (if there are any beyond the "symbolic") are more geared to Seagate and Quantum, who also make mid-to high-range desktop drives. APM and RDRT have already been in trouble but this highlights it more than accentuating it. IBM has alrady announced its intention to sell heads.
