From the article:

"...Java will not play a key role when the Merced microprocessor unit hits the streets in 1999..."

"...Microsoft is really under the gun to produce a good, 64-bit Windows NT because there will definitely be multiple versions of Unix for Merced,..."

"...Sun, in Palo Alto,Calif., is also making a strong play for its Solaris OS. Fujitsu, which is a major Sun reseller in Japan, is helping port Solaris to Merced..."

I hope SUNW does not do a Data General but can continue to be the top tier UNIX OS of choice. In either case, I agree that MS will continue to do well with their NT5.0 strategy. The real question is will it scale up and be reliable for a UNIX type (mission critical) application...even with the Merced fast processor.

Therefore your statement "As long as Solaris enjoys really broad support from the major application vendors, then they will continue to do well and avoid the fate of DG and other similar vendors." is so very true!

IMO it will at the expense of HWP, SCOC and several of the other UNIX vendors. I think it is a better than 50:50 .... but NT V5.0 (using the Merced processor)will be the big threat now some two years out.
