I'd be very careful about shorting some of the retailers at this time. In the cases of KM and AMES, the use of an improved, limited upscaling policy has/is allowing them to increase price points and expand margins. KM has >$450 million in cash, and better than a 2.2:1 current ratio. KM's ROE does appear sluggishly low however. I honestly thought KM was going to go under back in '95/'96. Surely we can find better shorting situations than the retailing sector, although I'll concede that some serious consolidation will take place sometime in the future.
