Mary, Re. CB is not a gambler - he's not shooting from the hips. That shouldn't be a surprise, should it? No senior members of Intel will ever shoot from the hip--I am willing to bet--as there is such a tangible thing as "company culture". Corporations are not a mere assembly of individuals. "We will pick up activity in 2nd half" - attributed to Intel ceo. Any semiconductor company that makes a statement otherwise,(i.e.,2nd half activity looks flat or down) is asking to be sent to the (stock) doghouse for good 6 months. Semiconductor cycle is the strongest in 4th quarter for all semi companies, for which they see the orders come in the 2nd or 3rd quarter. The key is how much of that is real and how much double ordering? (this phenomemon causes the gluts in the following first qtr.)
