Joseph - Miscommunication!! Ericsson didn't purchase G*, they only purchased a small company that manufacturers handsets for G*. As for Ericsson entering the CDMA arena, I agree. However, the problem is that there is a good chance that Qualcomm has a lock on some of the critical CDMA cell Intellectual Property. (Ericsson has as much as admitted that CDMA is the next step, by backing the European 3g standard W-CDMA. However, QCOM refuses to loose their IPR without the normal royalties.)

As for the market for CDMA chips, for the next few years it is likely to remain smaller than the number of chips that VLSI sells to ERICY. CDMA is growing more rapidly percentage wise, but is still small compared to even the ERICY portion of GSM. But, FWIW, the biggest market for CDMA chipsets is probably Japan. They are about to turn on a CDMA PCS system later this year.
