Goodboy, you are right on the money, the fun is just starting.
What a difference a year makes!!! Last year nobody was talking,
this year EVERYBODY WAS TALKING VOD. The scuttlebutt is they are
going to offer VOD at the SAME price as Blockbuster charges. There
must have been 100,000 there, and they expect today to be even
larger. We met Joan Rivers just walking around like anyone else.
Bill Gates gave the keynote and the "whisper" in the SFA booth
was that John Malone was coming to the SFA booth late yesterday.
The big wheels were "escorted" by top dogs and give the red carpet
treatment, of course. SFA was overflowing all day. CCUR seemed
to be extremely confident (they said they had SEAC badly beat on
price also). Apparently NCUBE's problem is they are not scalable.
SFA was prominently promoting CCUR's scalability (NOT SEAC's).
Looks to me like a two horse race, SEAC and CCUR with maybe DIVA
lurking out there (we were impressed with DIVA). I guarantee you
this, if anyone else had a competitive product, THEY WOULD HAVE
BEEN THERE, THIS IS THE CABLE EVENT OF THE YEAR. Many companies,
like WORLDCOM, were loudly proclaiming VOD capabilities but when
we talked to them THEY DIDN'T HAVE A PRODUCT. We expect they
will be calling CCUR or SEAC if they get any orders. SFA is far
ahead of General Instrument. SFA says (and it seemed to be true)
that they are the only one who has a product that is READY NOW.
