A-Man, I know you are a relatively new member of the DGIV thread, so let me add : welcome to the thread!! Great post: you have captured the essence of this thread and why we are so SUCCESSFUL against the MMs. As Byron said: United we stand against the MMs!!! A-man, loved your post. Technology has killed the BIG LIE. Freedom is exploding. Big Brother is being watched. Technology also killed the gas shortage, made the 80s (it was the computer, not Reganomics), and now the internet is bringing FREEDOM. We have just scratched the surface of what is possible! A-MAN -- Couldn't agree more with what you said. As a self-described student of sociology, current affairs, and history, I would hope that you are familiar with the works of Alvin Toffler. The points you made are straight from the premise of POWERSHIFT, the third of three works each written ten years apart. The first was FUTURE SHOCK in 1970 which expounded the premise that technology was bringing changes to society, individuals, and institutions at a rate faster thanthey could adopt and adapt to previous changes. As a result, much of what was going on in that era could be at least in part explained by a degree of "shock" in people and the culture. The second work in 1980 was THE THIRD WAVE. The title was taken from a surfing metaphor which held that the third wave in a set tended to be the big kahoona. Toffler said that the first cultural wave was the beginning of agriculture, domestication of animals, and the rise and spread of the division of labor. It begat "civilization". The second wave was the industrial revolution and the commericialization of chemistry, physics, and science in general. This begat factories and the mass consumer market. Toffler's third wave was the advent of digitized information and the computer. In 1980 made a case foreshadowing the pc and said it would produce much greater changes at a much faster rate than the other two waves combined. This wave begat DGVI and the wealth so many here are already counting. POWERSHIFT 1990, extends Toffler's ideas about the third wave -- digitized data technology -- and says essentially what you stated in your post. Wealth, Force, and Knowledge have always been the three keys to power. Wealth and Force have always held sway because of the level of technology. But now, Power based on digitized information has transcended and controls the other two. Hence, the title -- a fundamental shift hs taken place in the nature of power. Here's the intro: "This is a book about power at the edge of the 21st century. It deals with violence, wealth, and knowledge and the roles they play in our lives. It is about the new paths to power opened by a world in upheaval. For this is the dawn of the Powershift Era. We live at a moment when the entire structure of power that held the world togeher is now disintegrating. And this is happening at every level of human society. In the ofice, in thesupermarket, at the bank, in the executive suite, in our churches, hospitals, schools, along strange new linew. This crackup of old-style authority and power in business and daily life is accelerating at the very moment when gobal power structures are disintegrating as well.
