I printed out Veneroso but haven't yet read it. That gold remaining in the central banks of individual European states is considered by some to be a large potential overhanging the market, and I find that view difficult to disagree with.

One other thing about a gold backing. It sort of implies that if you go off printing money, each note is backed by a lesser amount of gold than it was previously. On the other hand if your currency is backed mostly by faith sprinkled over with a little gold dust, then that may be regarded as an infinitely fungible quality.
