Bollmonster... While I enjoy the interchange (and would like to continue)..there were some excellent discussions (with some REAL expertise) back a month or so on this thread. And I would commend some of the excellent comments for reading.
But your point about required investment was not addressed very much, and it is a good one. There will be a VERY LARGE investment required. DPMI has been putting a lot of effort (and money) into establishing themselves in new facilities. They are trying to establish relationships with new companies, as well (eg, Hoya in Japan). One of their new facilities is in Gresham OR, at the location of LSI Logic's newest fab. But there actually is a concern that the rest of the capital spending required for the move to line widths below .25u may not be met. The chip makers are not committing strongly enough to the next move to ensure profitability for new investment by PLAB, MASK, or DPMI. Or at least that worry exists in the industry.
But I'm not so sure that I (or the photomask companies) would mind a slightly tight market for their product. The DRAM folks' margins didn't benefit greatly from staying ahead of demand for THEIR product.., right? TSO
