Man what we gave up! To aspire to greatness no? To pick your help; the gardener, the housegirl, the nanny like one selects furniture. Must have the right color in the right place.

50 years? How long does memory of that past live on in a family's feelings, resentments, and political beliefs? How many japanese sons became doctors not just because it was a 'free' career zone but because they were tired of having the 'plantation' elite determine who lived and who died.

On the other hand, or for something completely different. I am always amazed how similar the politics of other pacific island nations is to Hawaii. Not in the gross generalities; but in the subtle ways people interact, and make their politics, have their scandals.

Mainlanders don't understand that, many people in hawaii don't realize it, but the island culture is still strong. If only becase you can not get away from the physical facts and they make their mark on everyone who lives here/there; even in Hawaii where you can immerse your self in US Mainland culture all you want.

But I'm more interested in things from a historical rather than a political perspective. The individual who started this thread does not seem to have understood the past very well. But that takes time to learn. Politics is easier you just start slappin the lips.
